Come be merry with us and help stop domestic violence! 5th Live and Silent Purse Auction - Another Sold Out Event The 5th annual “Handbags for Hope” Purse Auction and Luncheon was held on Saturday, November 12, at The Country Club of Indianapolis. The sold-out event had 150 people in attendance for entertainment, food, testimonials, and purses! The emcee for the event was Kjerstin Ramsing of Fox 59 TV, and we thank her for doing a great job for us. We were especially fortunate to enjoy a nationally acclaimed singer, Brenda Williams, as she performed for us. We were privileged to hear from two of our clients who are getting their lives back together, and were especially moved to hear from an 11-year-old girl about how Beacon of Hope has helped her and her mother heal. Our goal is to sustain a transitional housing unit where we can offer families a longer stay to make real changes in their lives and develop independence.
The real fun started with our wonderful male models that showed us 85 purses during the live auction. These models were: Greg Browning of 104.5 WJJK Radio; Kurt Wallace of 88.3 Shine.FM Radio; Rick Proctor, President, West Side Chamber of Commerce; Andy Harris, Wayne Township Trustee; and Ryan Eagle, Shon Hough, Jason Kean, and Scott Williams and Dave Jackson of the Wayne Township Fire Department. Our top selling purse went for $450 and was donated by a local female celebrity. We had 30 purses bid on in the silent action.
All in all, a wonderful time was had and Beacon of Hope raised money toward achieving our goals. Special thanks to our sponsors: Gold - SPG Graphics and Romar Concepts, Inc., Silver - Kevin and Maggie Smith and White Oak Construction, Bronze - US Water Systems.com, and Leffler Industrial Tire and Track.
Our 6th Live and Silent Purse Auction is scheduled for November 10, 2012. FOSTER PET PROGRAM IS UNDERWAY AND WE NEED HELP FROM ALL ANIMAL LOVERS
Research studies show, 25% of women coming to the shelters are reporting their abuser has either threatened, injured or killed their family pet.
Victims of family violence know that an abuser will direct his/her anger at pets because they are more vulnerable and it is another method used to control the primary victim. This is a major barrier for victims to escape the violence. Domestic violence shelters accept women and children, but they do not accept pets unless they are service animals.

We have began the interviewing process for interested foster pet families. Beacon of Hope Center for Women is committed to supporting the needs of Women and Children who have been affected by violence. The Foster Pet Program consists of volunteer host families who agree to temporarily house pets while their family is getting to safety and the help they need. We are also looking for Volunteers to transport the animal from a safe location to a location to meet with our Foster Pet Service Coordinator so she can transport the pet to the foster family. Please call our office at 731-6131. Beacon of Hope is collaborating with Legacy House on the Eastside of Indianapolis to protect the innocent animals.

The festivities for the evening included an Hawaiian Buffet, Silent, Super Silent, Live Auction, Bidding Frenzy and a specially designed fund-a-need targeting two specific areas that some women cannot afford; emergency housing and individual counseling. The results from our fund-A-need exceeded our expectations and we reached our goals.
Terry Moore, Executive Director said "Everyone who came to the event left feeling inspired and more aware of how much domestic violence is out there in the community". We have received numerous calls from the guests who are on board to help us move our future goal along by opening a 24 hour emergency shelter. Many of our guests never knew about us until someone invited them to come. This was the exciting part for me because we were able to make more people aware of our mission and form new partnerships.
